Cover Re-Reveal & Cover Reveal – Be A Doll & Take a Chance

Hi lovelies,

I don’t have one but TWO cover reveals! This is always exciting for me. 🙂

As you know, I’ve been debating between changing Be A Doll‘s cover or not, but after consulting readers and author friends, I’ve decided to change the cover. There’s not a better time to reveal the new cover than doing it when revealing the spin-off novella’s cover.

Are you ready to drool?

Be A Doll change of cover essai

At Carter Manor, women were groomed to become the perfect next trophy wife for the most influential and powerful men in the world.
Polished, educated, and disciplined… they met every criteria.
Or did they?

LILA

After escaping two prospective husbands, I knew I didn’t have much of a choice anymore but to play by the rules if I didn’t want to end up back in the streets.
Upon meeting him I expected an older disgusting man, but he proved me wrong.
He was young, handsome… and despicable.
His cold hearted behavior and condescension caused me to lose my carefully built appearance of sophistication, but somehow, it made me win a husband who enjoyed toying with me until he could break the last pieces of who I used to be. I wouldn’t let him.
I hated him.
At least I did at first, until I had a peek underneath his walls and discovered the kind of pain he shouldered.

MATHIS

I never thought I’d get married and even less that I would be purchasing my wife, but for my business I would do anything.
At the Manor, I was sure I’d find bland women so polished that nothing of their own personality was left. But one candidate couldn’t hide the fire in her.
I was drawn, ready to toy with her, to tease her until she folded for me and let me take her to make her fully mine and not in name only.
I didn’t want love, I didn’t want her to be in my living space and I certainly didn’t want her to see who I really was under the facade I had spent years shaping myself to be, but that was exactly what was happening.
She fascinated me.
Her strength made me want her in the most all-consuming way.
Now I wondered who possessed whom.

Release: Late February/Early March

MEGAN

Ever since my brother brought Chance Atwood home during their freshman year in college, I’ve been in love with him. I couldn’t explain it or find a way to silence my stupid heart.
I’ve ignored those feelings for years, but watching Chance pick up a woman at my brother’s very unconventional wedding told me that I couldn’t keep on inflicting this kind of heartbreak on myself.
When a date with another man failed to make me forget the searing blue eyes I daydreamed of on a daily basis, I realized I had to take matters into my own hands by putting an end to this and see if my hopes were as ridiculous as I feared.
It was time to either give wings to my little heart or shatter the damn thing.

CHANCE

When Megan Grimes, my best friend’s little sister, told me she loved me it was the single most insane moment of my life. It beat the day her brother announced his plan to “purchase” a wife.
Like any self-absorbed man who had never noticed a friend’s sister before, I handled it poorly.
But the trouble was, I couldn’t forget Megan’s soft eyes, the pain I inflicted her and more than everything, her beauty stunned me.
When she came back after fleeing the city, I had to see her, talk to her… and kiss her.
As she consumed me more and more, I should have come clean to her brother, but he wasn’t the most sympathetic man there was, and I owed him everything.
Conflicted like never before, I risked losing my very heart, the one thing that had no price tag, for a lifestyle I had thought was everything.

Megan took a chance; it was time Chance did the same.

** For readers over 18. It’s best to read BE A DOLL first. **

GOODREADS

What do you think?

For info: Be A Doll is a long slow burn with angst and a lot of sexual tension. Take a Chance is a novella that’s sweet, cute with a little bit of sexy thrown in. 😉

For the Love of Books Blog Hop + giveaway

ForTheLoveOfBooks

Hi lovelies!

I’m happy to be a part of a fun blog hop hosted by Stuck in Books.

Don’t miss the giveaway at the end of this post to win a $5 Amazon GC. Good luck!

Today, I’m supposed to share with you at least one book I love. I’ve decided on talking about The Wall of Winnipeg and Me by Mariana Zapata.

I bet you’ve heard of this one and it’s already on your Read shelf, but like always, I’m late! That’s the issue when you have too many books on your TBR. 😮

51xepyKfARL._SY346_

Vanessa Mazur knows she’s doing the right thing. She shouldn’t feel bad for quitting. Being an assistant/housekeeper/fairy godmother to the top defensive end in the National Football Organization was always supposed to be temporary. She has plans and none of them include washing extra-large underwear longer than necessary.

But when Aiden Graves shows up at her door wanting her to come back, she’s beyond shocked.

For two years, the man known as The Wall of Winnipeg couldn’t find it in him to tell her good morning or congratulate her on her birthday. Now? He’s asking for the unthinkable.

What do you say to the man who is used to getting everything he wants?

ADD TO GOODREADS

Why do I love this book?

For many reasons. The slow burn is sweet and kept me guessing as to when the two characters would open their eyes. Reading how they slowly got closer, opened up was wonderful. The writing is flawless and easily conveys Vanessa’s voice. The secondary characters bring that little something to the whole story to make you feel as if you jumped into their little world.

This is the kind of book I’d love to read more often.

That’s it for now, but I’d love to know what you think of The Wall of Winnipeg and Me or share your latest book recommendation. Comment and don’t forget to enter the giveaway. x

GIMP, an overview

GIMP an overview for blog

Hi lovelies,

I’m back with a little overview of GIMP. After posting the short tutorial to show you how to make a quick teaser without using anything too fancy, I realized that maybe it’d be best to give you an overview of what GIMP has to offer.

In this article, I won’t cover everything in-depth or else we’d still be here in a month, but I’m going to show you a few icons and give you directions if you want to play around and try a few things.

Next, I will cover how to use layers and how they are displayed in GIMP.

For now, let’s have a closer look at GIMP! 😉

1. General

IMG_0282

This is the French version. The English version is exactly the same.

Once GIMP is installed on your computer and you open it, this is what it looks like. I’ve opened a new project (ebook cover) to show you how your project appears on your screen.

You can zoom in or zoom out by clicking on the magnifying glass icon. Bear in mind that the project is often pixelized, but once you save your file it’s not. To make sure it matches what I have in mind, I save a temporary file and open it to preview at the best screen resolution available. I’d rather not take risks!

IMG_0283

When you click on FILE (fichier here) it opens a new menu. Click on the first line to open a new project. If you wish to know how to insert a picture into your project (teaser, ebook, graphics…), check Design Your Teasers – the first steps.

IMG_0284

Layer (Calque here) is a very important part of your design work. If you understand layers you have no reason to worry! 🙂

In the layer menu, you have several things like merging a layer with the one below, adding a new layer and so on. I will explain everything in the next tutorial. Stay tuned!

IMG_0285

Filters (Filtres here) is where you will find a lot of effects you can add to your layers (text, picture, etc). I’d recommend you to play around with the filters. That’s the best way to see what you like and don’t like. Also, since you can change parameters of most filters, trial and errors is the best process if you want to understand how all the filters work. I will post tutorials covering some filters in order to give you a few tips. 😉

IMG_0288

This is the menu that appears when you click on Filters. Each of these options has more options. It can be overwhelming at first, but take the time to discover everything.

IMG_0286

Check GIMP’s website to see what’s all about Fx-Foundry. I recommend you to install this because it gives you a lot more creative options. Also, the more add-ons you have installed, the more options you have later on when you want to design something a little more unique.

IMG_0289

This is the menu that appears when you click on Fx-Foundry. This is like for Filters. More options appear and some of these can be fun to play around with. I’ll show you in another tutorial. In the meantime, try a few things and don’t be afraid to make something you don’t like on the first try.

2. A Closer Look

IMG_0287

Now, it’s time to talk about these little icons. You won’t use all of them, but some of these icons are VERY important. I’ll talk about the ones I use the most.

IMG_0290

The selection icon is probably one of the icons I use the most. Once you’re familiar with it you’ll notice that you constantly use it. 🙂

When do I use the selection tool? When I want to add a Drop Shadow effect to a title or text, I select the icon then click on the text. It selects the color within a layer. It’s the same if I want to create a gradient effect to a title for example. This is very useful. This is not the only use, but I’ll show you in another tutorial what this little icon helps you do.

IMG_0291

This ‘cutting’ icon can be helpful, but you must be careful when you use it. For example, when you insert a picture, it’s always larger than the size of your canvas. In the tutorial Design Your Teasers – the first steps I showed you how to re-size your picture for your canvas. Sometimes, when you’re not ready to merge layers but you want to cut the edges of the pic if they’re going beyond your canvas, then you’re going to use this tool. Try it to see how it works, but for now, I’d recommend you to leave it alone if you want to design something.

IMG_0292

This is an icon I always use when I start a new project. Re-sizing a picture or layer is something you have to do and it’s often tiring to get it just right. Take your time! Check Design Your Teasers – the first steps for a preview of how to re-size a picture or layer.

IMG_0293

This icon moves a layer. You can highlight the layer you want to move and then click on this icon. Once it’s done, you can go to your project, click and drag your layer anywhere you want it. Personally, I use it when I sometimes want to move a text layer. I often use several layers merged together for texts and then I find it easier to use this tool to move everything together neatly.

IMG_0294

You can change the angle of a layer with this icon. It’s very useful when you don’t want your title or text to be horizontal for example. This works for all layers (picture, text…). You can decide on the angle. I’ll show you a little trick with that tool another time.

IMG_0295

This icon is very useful and can offer simple effects you can personalize at will. When you click on that icon, you can pick a color, the layer you want to paint and then click once on your project to paint the whole layer. The fun thing is that you can change the opacity and the blending mode by double-clicking on that icon. I sometimes use this for teasers.

IMG_0296

What is the gradient icon? Well, to put it simply, it lets you add a gradient effect to a text, a picture and you can decide on the color(s), the opacity and blending mode. It can add a nice touch to some projects. I’ll show you examples another time to illustrate what you can do with this tool.

IMG_0297

The icon brushes. Ah, that’s one thing that made me sweat when I first installed GIMP. 😮

The brushes available on GIMP are very limited. The trick is to install more that you can find on different websites. Some brushes are free, a lot aren’t. I don’t have many brushes, but I have a few that I like to use sporadically. With brushes, you can ‘draw’. You can change the opacity, the blending mode and mostly you can truly personalize your project depending on what you have in mind. I’ll show you how I use brushes on something I’m working on for a future cover.

IMG_0298

This icon is useful, but I don’t use it often. It lets you flip a layer from one side to the other. For example, when you have a picture of a guy and you don’t like that he’s on the left side with his arm up. You’re going to click on that icon, then click on the picture and then the guy will be on the right side instead.

IMG_0303

This is a neat tool. I love it and I often use it. When you have a picture with a bold color that you want to be added to your title for example, but you don’t know which color it is exactly. You’re going to click on this little icon, and then click on the color on the picture. It’ll give you the exact color value! It’s easy and it’s a very nice touch.

IMG_0302

When you click on this icon, it’ll add a text layer. Check Design Your Teasers – the first steps to see how you can add a text and how the layer appears. It can be tricky at first, but in time you will find it easy to use.

IMG_0299

All this talk of layers and you’re probably wondering where they are. Well, as you progress on your project, you’ll find your layers listed here. Right now the project is still blank, but you get the idea.

IMG_0300

As you’re progressing and once you have a better idea of what you want on your teasers or graphics, you’ll see that you often end up with a lot of layers. Some of my covers have maybe close to twenty or so layers (mostly because I don’t often merge them together as I work).

IMG_0301

Remember when I talked about opacity? Well, here is how you can play with a layer’s opacity. Right now, it’s set to 100 which is the maximum. As you change the opacity you will see how it changes your project as you go.

IMG_0304

I also talked about blending mode, layer mode and here is how it appears once you click on the thingy next to ‘mode’ just above the opacity. As you can see, there are many options. Play around with everything and see how it works. I recommend you to use this for the text layer(s) as I find it’s not necessarily pretty on pictures. That’s my opinion, of course. 🙂

3. A Few Words…

This is very succinct, but I hope it’ll give you directions if you want to give GIMP a try. If you want a more in-depth step-by-step kind of tutorial to design a teaser, check Design Your Teasers – the first steps. I think that if you follow that tutorial you will have a new teaser ready in no time to share on your social media.

If you still find GIMP overwhelming, keep in mind that it takes time to be familiar with it.  Play around with the different effects and see what you like or don’t like. And if you have an issue with something or if you’d like a specific tutorial, post a little comment and let me know. 🙂

Next, I will post a tutorial to help you with layers. Don’t miss it!

I hope this quick tour will help you. Share with your friends, authors, bloggers and readers alike, if you think they’d like to create teasers or graphics. 🙂

See you soon!

I did a thing…

Hi lovelies,

I hope you had or are having a great weekend. For me, it’s a productive one since I’m hurrying to finish the first draft of a novella my editor expects next week. I have three scenes left to write and then… the end!

This past week was scary, thrilling and quite crazy with the release of my new book MESSY LOVE. By the way, it’s still $0.99 but not for much longer so don’t wait!

By now, you must be wondering what I did that justified a new post on the blog. Let me explain.

A while ago, I did a poll asking readers if they would prefer I keep my novel Be A Doll in Kindle Unlimited or if I published it wide, meaning that it would be available on iTunes, Kobo and B&N. It appeared that you wanted Be A Doll available on other stores.

And I finally did it!

Be A Doll is available on Amazon, but also iTunes, Kobo and B&N. What do you think?

If you don’t remember what Be A Doll is about, let me remind you. 😉

Messy Love is LIVE early! & giveaway

Messy Love - Live sale for limited time

Hi lovelies,

This is completely crazy, but MESSY LOVE is live early and only $0.99 or FREE with KU.

Why is it crazy, you ask?

The release date was January 12, but considering Amazon asks for up to 72 hours to list a book on their website, I decided to hit publish today but it only took me 4 hours to get Messy Love published. 4 hours! This isn’t great news because now nothing is set to promote the book for days. :/

But let’s focus on the good.

I have a new book published! 😀

Grab Messy Love while it’s on sale for only $0.99 or FREE with KindleUnlimited. The sale won’t last long so you better hurry.

So now that the book is out, I need to promote it as much as possible and it starts with a nice giveaway on my Facebook Page. Head over there and check out the pinned post for instructions in order to win a $25 Amazon GC. Good luck!

It was messy.
It was raw.
It was love.

MARISSA

The first time I laid eyes on Wyatt Burton was outside of my biological mother’s house. Abandoning me twenty years ago, I never knew that meeting her would change my life so completely. In fact, there were many things that I never expected that day, but there were a few things I knew for sure. Nothing would ever be the same–not even me. And it was all about to get very MESSY.

WYATT

Marissa Thornton deserved so much. She was beautiful beyond reason and never took my shit. She drew me in, while driving out the worst in me. But when she let me in, trusted me completely, I thought I could finally let down my guard and find true happiness. I was wrong. Dead wrong, about myself, about her, and most importantly about the binds of LOVE.

Design Your Teasers – the first steps

IMG_0144

Hi lovelies,

It’s time to jump right in!

Do you have a novel ready and are you dying to share teasers?

Do you want to design your teasers?

Are you looking for ways to design teasers without spending too much money?

Then install GIMP and add-ons. Ready?

Let’s give it a try! 😛

1. What size for my teasers?

I can’t give you a size because I’m still playing around. Most of my teasers have the same size, but it all depends on what you want on your teaser and the kind of picture you’re going to use. Also, let’s not forget that where you post your teasers is important.

Most of my teasers have the same size, but it all depends on what you want on your teaser and the kind of picture you’re going to use. Also, let’s not forget that where you post your teasers is important.

IMG_0145

You can either design a ‘square’ teaser or a ‘rectangle’ teaser. Both shapes are interesting and can be a better fit depending on your project.

Now, I’m sure you’re wondering how you can decide on a square or rectangle shape. Well, while I don’t have the perfect answer for you, I can list a few questions you should ask yourself before you start your design. 🙂

  • Do you have all the quotes from your novel you want to use for teasers? It’s best to have all your quotes ready because I find easier to design all your teasers at once.
  • Is your cover designed? If you want your teaser to go well with your cover, it’s best to have your cover already designed. For example, when you put your title on your teaser it looks better if the title matches the way it looks on your cover.
  • Have you purchased the pictures you want to use? This is very important. One, you can’t use a picture taken from the internet. Two, you need a picture if you want to design your teaser unless it’s more of a conceptual kind of teaser.
  • Have you purchased the fonts you’re going to use? There are free fonts, but you must check before.
  • Is your quote long or short for the teaser? This will help you decide on a shape for your teaser.
  • Where are you going to post your teasers (website, blog, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram…)? Square teasers usually look better on Instagram, but also Twitter.
  • Do you have an idea of what you want your teaser to look like? For this, you should play around before you settle on one look for your teaser. I find the first teaser always harder to make because I don’t know yet how I want it to look. Once you’re happy with the first teaser, the others are easier and faster to make.

As you can see, square or rectangle… it’s entirely at your discretion, but factor in the length of your quote, the picture you want on your teaser and your preference.

Now, let’s talk size. 😉

Personally, I have set two sizes for my teasers on GIMP.

  • Rectangle: 1200×630
  • Square: 1640×1640

And don’t forget that your teasers (or any other promo graphics and covers) must be 300 dpi.

2. How do I set the size for the teaser in GIMP?

Note: I consider that GIMP is already installed on your computer and that the add-ons you wanted to be implemented are there too. Check GIMP’s website for more information.

Capture d_écran 2018-01-01 à 14.43.27

I have the French version of GIMP, so I’m sorry if it’s harder for you to follow, but everything is the same.

This is what you see when you open GIMP.

Now let me show you how you set the size of your canvas and the dpi.

IMG_0153

IMG_0154

It opens a new window.

IMG_0155

And here is your canvas.

IMG_0156

As you can see, now you’re all set to start designing your teaser. 😀

3. How do I get a picture on my canvas?

This is a very easy step.

First, you must have your picture saved on your computer. Then…

IMG_0159

IMG_0160

‘Ouvrir en tant que calque…’ should be something like ‘Open as layer’ for you.

Then, locate your picture in the list.

Capture d_écran 2018-01-01 à 15.18.13

Once your picture is selected, you’ll see it appear on your canvas. Of course, it’ll be much larger than you need, so you have to change the size of your picture and decide on where you’re going to crop it.

Let me show you how I do it as I go with this example. 🙂

4. How do I crop and re-size my picture on the canvas?

Once again, it’s very easy. This is where you can take some creative liberties depending on your picture or the appearance you want to give your teaser.

IMG_0164

Since the picture is a lot bigger than the size of my canvas, I need to resize it and decide on where it’ll be cropped. There’s no real advice I can give you because it all depends on you and what you want.

Since I told you to import your picture as a layer, it’s much easier to re-size.

IMG_0165

As you can see, you have several icons on the left side of your screen. Click on the icon I’m showing you with the arrow.

IMG_0166

This is what appears. There’s a grid on top of your picture and a small window. Before you do anything else, click on the chain (I don’t know if it’s a chain, but let’s call if a chain 😛 ). It’ll lock the scale so your picture isn’t squished once you change the size.

From there, you can either enter the size of your picture with your keyboard in the small window or—and this is how I prefer to do it—you can use your mouse pad/trackpad by dragging the grid to reduce the overall size of your picture.

Take your time and don’t rush it. It’s very important to set things just how you want, but since this is a layer you can always come back to it later.

Capture d_écran 2018-01-01 à 16.01.44

Here is how mine is.

Since I’m happy with it, I’ve decided to merge my layer with the picture with the background layer. Don’t do it right away.

In my experience, when you’re starting out you tend to need time to figure out how you want to design your teaser. Layers ensure that you can always come back later and change a few things. (Would you like an article that would cover layers and how to use them?)

5. Add text

Now, we want to add text. Grab your quote and get ready! 🙂

IMG_0171

On the list of icons on the left, click on the ‘A’.

IMG_0172

You can then create a square/rectangle for your text. It’s a brand new layer and you don’t have to mind the size since you can change it by dragging the corner(s) to place it wherever you want on the canvas.

Copy/Paste your quote into the square and then highlight it before you select the font, the size of the font and color.

IMG_0173

Once your text is highlighted, select the font you want in the list and then the size and color. Once it’s done, you’ll find it easier to drag the text where you want it on your teaser.

IMG_0174

As you can see, I’ve decided on dragging my text to the left side for this teaser. I want to keep things simple.

Right now, I haven’t changed the color because I’m not sure yet of what I want. I’ll have a better idea when the title is placed on the teaser.

IMG_0176

When you ‘double click’ on the icon text, you have this small window on the bottom left side. It can be helpful (mostly 2. & 3. in my opinion).

For my teaser example, the text wouldn’t fit unless I played around with the spacing between lines. I often play around with the spacing between lines and letters. With some fonts, it can be helful.

  1. lets you put an indentation.

  2. lets you play with the space betwen lines. +15,0 would have increased the spacing. -15,0 decreased it.

  3. lets you play with the space between letters. Here it’s set on 0, but it works just like for the space between lines.

You will often have to play around with these as you go.

Messy LOVE example teaser for tutorial blog

Here is what I came up with for my example. It’s not perfect and it’s very simple looking, but I think that in the beginning, it’s better to do simple looking teasers and work your way to harder things.

NOTE: If you’re wondering how I came up with the strange looking effect in the title of the book, I’ll show you quickly and spend more time at a later date if you’re interested.

Capture d_écran 2018-01-01 à 17.15.33

On the bottom half of this screenshot, you see a list of layers. Since this teaser is pretty simple, the layers are mostly for the texts (quote and title).

See the layer that starts with ‘HOW…’ is highlighted. The opacity is set to 100, which is the max and the Mode is set to Normal. You have to understand that there are many modes in the scrolling menu. You can select a layer and change the mode. Then you can play around with the superposition of layers for your title and make a fun looking effect.

For this teaser (and the cover of the book), the title is a superposition of several layers with different modes and a drop shadow that can easily be done.

6. How can I add a Drop Shadow to a text (quote and/or title)?

IMG_0178

First, select the layer with the text you want to add a Drop Shadow effect to. Here, I’ve decided on one of the layers for the title.

Then, click on the icon in the list of icons on the left side of your screen.

Finally, click on the text (inside a letter). As you can see, it selects all the letters of your layer.

Now, you’re ready for that Drop Shadow.

IMG_0181

IMG_0182

IMG_0183

Note that ‘Ombre Portée’ here is ‘Drop Shadow’ for you.

Once you click on Drop Shadow it opens a new window that asks you if you want to adapt the Drop Shadow, but you don’t have to change anything if you want to try at first.

An advice: uncheck the box that asks you if you want to adapt the image to the Drop Shadow. If you keep that option and your Drop Shadow goes beyond the limits of your canvas, it’ll mess with your design.

As you can see in the list of layers, a Drop Shadow is added to a new layer. I’ve decided to add the Drop Shadow effect twice. You’ll have to test a few times and play around until you’re satisfied with your teaser.

Be. Patient. 😉

And that’s it for the first steps in Teaser Design. 🙂

As you can see, it can be pretty simple and yet look nice. Of course, it all depends on what you want and your cover’s concept.

One last advice. Avoid putting too many different fonts on your teasers for a start. At first, it can be difficult to have nice looking teasers with several fonts and colors. It can easily be aggressive for the eye and people won’t necessarily take the time to read.

I will post a little something to show you what is best to avoid in my opinion. That will go for teasers, but also covers.

I hope this little tutorial helped you and that you’re still interested in learning more about GIMP.

It can be overwhelming at first, but once you’re familiarized with GIMP you’ll find it easier to try new things. 😀

What would you like me to post next?

Do you have a question?

Talk to you soon. xoxo

Messy Love New Teaser!

Hi lovelies,

Do you remember Messy Love?

I know it’s been a while and I’m sure that I’ve succeeded in ruining the release, but I’m hoping some of you are still waiting for this book.

Since it’s Tuesday, I thought I’d share another teaser while my editor is working on the second round of edits.

And if you’re wondering, the release is just days away.

New essai cover MESSY LOVE painting style

2018 – Writing Goals

IMG_0148

Hi lovelies,

This is the first day of 2018, and at this time everything is possible. Let’s hope 2018 will be a better year than 2017. *fingers crossed*

We often have resolutions whenever we start a new year, but this time I’d like to focus on writing goals I’d like to achieve. I feel like if I post them here I’ll be accountable and be more inclined to do my best to reach those goals. 😉

So, without further ado…

2018 Writing Goals:

  • Publish at least 4 books
  • Finish re-writing Maxen (and publish it)
  • Publish Take a Chance (spinoff novella Be A Doll)
  • Write shorter novels (60-75k instead of 95-110k)
  • Publish regularly through the year
  • Spend more on promotions
  • Get at least one book in the top 500 ‘Paid Kindle Store’
  • Post updates regularly in my Facebook Group
  • Write a rom-com
  • Don’t go on Goodreads too often
  • Plot a summer read kind of novella

And I think that’s all for now!

What are your resolutions/goals for 2018?
